英語で読む: Happy black history month!

Did you know that February is the black history month in the USA?

Please read the notes about three black persons (below, all from wikipedia.org) and think of the following questions:
– Which of these three persons seems to be the most interesting to you? Why?
– Why do some people celebrate `black history month`? Do you think it is necessary? Do you like this idea?
– Do you know any famous black person living in Japan? Who is it? Why is he / she famous?

After thinking about these questions, write an answer to ONE of them (5-10 sentences).

Josephine Baker (1906 – 1975) was a dancer, singer, and actress who found fame in her adopted homeland of France. She was given such nicknames as the “Bronze Venus”, the “Black Pearl”, and the “Créole Goddess”. She was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture, (…) and to become a world-famous entertainer. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (and) for assisting the French Resistance during World War II.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929 – 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for (…) using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. (…) King’s efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. There, he expanded American values to include the vision of a color blind society (…). In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means.

Riley B. King (born September 16, 1925), known by the stage name B.B. King, is an American blues guitarist and singer-songwriter. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him at No.3 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. (…) In 2006, King played six times in Brazil. During a press conference (…) in São Paulo, a journalist asked King if that would be the actual farewell tour. He answered: “One of my favorite actors is (…) Sean Connery. Most of you know him as James Bond, 007. He made a movie called Never Say Never Again.”
