I am a member of one mailing list. One of the issues discussed there recently was how difficult it is to get a childcare leave if you are a woman in Japan. One person noticed that the work life can be difficult not only for women but also for men:
(…) It is not often mentioned, but this kind of highly gendered society [as the Japanese society] puts pressure on both genders. While women may be forced to quit their jobs when they get married or have children and may not be able to get back into the workforce after leaving to have children, men face the pressure of being the only breadwinner in the family, having to work long hours and the shame if they are ever seen to be lacking financially. Clearly, a society that offers equal rights to both genders gives more freedom to both genders to run their life the way they want to run it and to couples to support each other.
After reading the text, think of the questions below and write an answer to ONE of them (5-10 sentences):
1. When you meet your friends and chat together, do you / your friends complain about some things in your lives? What are the popular topics to complain about?
2. Do you agree with the statement that the Japanese men face many pressures in their lives? Which of these pressures are, in your opinion, the most difficult ones?
3. Make your own sentences with the words written in bold.
